Crime Prevention

Small, everyday habits can help reduce the risk of theft and other crimes. LUPD encourages students, faculty, and staff to look out for one another and report safety concerns. Responsibility for a crime always rests with the person who commits it.

Need immediate assistance? Call LUPD at (504) 865-3434.

Bicycle and mobility device security

  • Lock your device to a fixed bicycle rack, securing the frame and a wheel when possible. Use a sturdy lock and secure removable parts.
  • Keep a record of the serial number, make, model, color, and distinguishing features. Save photographs in a place you can access if the device is missing.
  • Take removable valuables with you and check that your device is locked before leaving it.
  • Use LUPD’s free mobility device registration service. An officer will collect device information, photograph it, and provide a permit sticker.

See Mobility device registration and other LUPD services for details.

Protect your belongings

  • Keep phones, laptops, bags, and wallets with you. Ask someone you trust to watch your belongings if you must step away.
  • Lock residence rooms and offices when you leave, even briefly. Keep keys and access cards secure.
  • Do not prop open secured doors or lend your access credentials. Direct visitors to the appropriate check-in location.
  • Record serial numbers and keep photographs of valuable property to help identify it if it is lost or stolen.

Vehicle security

  • Lock doors, close windows, and take your keys with you.
  • Take valuables with you when possible. Keep items left in the vehicle out of sight before reaching your destination.
  • Choose well-lit parking areas when available and stay aware of your surroundings as you approach or leave your vehicle.
  • Report signs of a break-in or suspicious activity to LUPD. Avoid touching disturbed areas until you receive guidance.

Moving around campus

  • Plan your route and use well-lit, populated paths when possible.
  • Keep enough attention on your surroundings to notice traffic, people, and changing conditions.
  • If you feel unsafe, move toward a populated place and call for assistance. Avoid confronting someone whose behavior concerns you.
  • Request an LUPD safety escort by calling (504) 865-3434. Escorts are available throughout both campuses and adjacent public streets; response time depends on officer availability.

Scams and fraud

  • Pause before acting on an unexpected message that demands urgent payment, threatens consequences, or offers an unusually attractive deal.
  • Verify requests through a phone number or website you already trust, rather than using contact information supplied in a suspicious message.
  • Do not share passwords or verification codes. Treat requests for gift cards, cryptocurrency, or money transfers with caution.
  • Avoid opening unexpected attachments or signing in through unfamiliar links. Keep devices and software updated.
  • If you suspect fraud, preserve the messages and transaction details and contact LUPD for reporting guidance.

Report safety concerns

Report crimes, suspicious activity, and safety hazards promptly. Describe specific actions you observed, rather than assumptions based on a person’s appearance or identity.

  • For immediate danger or an urgent need for assistance, call (504) 865-3434.
  • Provide the location, what happened, when it occurred, and relevant descriptions of people or vehicles. Tell the dispatcher whether anyone is injured or in danger.
  • For a non-emergency anonymous tip, use the anonymous tip feature in the Loyno Alert safety app. See Silent Witness Report for instructions and download links.
  • For more guidance, visit Reporting to LUPD.

Do not use anonymous tips or online reporting for emergencies.
